Spain housing crisis sparks protests and political tension

The death of 87-year-old Maricarmen Abascal, a pensioner who died days after being evicted from her long-term Madrid home, has ignited widespread housing protests across Spain. The incident has intensified the national debate over rising rents and the role of investment funds in the housing market.

In response to the unrest, Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez proposed a housing decree featuring indefinite rental contracts and a ban on evicting vulnerable individuals until 2030. However, the package failed in Congress, leading Sánchez to move legislative elections forward to November 29. A general strike has also been called for November 11.

Controversy has also surrounded individual political figures. Reports have scrutinized the assets of Socialist leader María Jesús Montero and alleged irregular housing use by PSOE spokesperson Mar Espinar. Meanwhile, the Madrid City Council is reportedly using AI to review video footage of protesters camping in Puerta del Sol to identify potential crimes.
