Spain implements AI-powered radars to monitor driver behavior
The Spanish Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT) and local authorities are deploying advanced radar systems to detect various driving infractions. In Madrid, new thermal radars have been installed on the A-2 highway to monitor the Bus-VAO lane. These systems use license plate recognition and occupancy detection technology to ensure vehicles meet the specific requirements for using the reserved lane.
In cities like Pamplona, artificial intelligence-equipped radars are being used to identify distractions and safety violations without requiring a physical police presence. These devices can detect the use of mobile phones, which carries a fine of 200 euros and a six-point deduction from the driver's license. Other detectable infractions include failure to wear seatbelts, running red lights, illegal turns, and driving in the wrong direction.
Data from recent surveillance campaigns indicates that mobile phone use is a leading cause of road accidents, accounting for a significant portion of traffic violations during inspections.
