Spain border controls on Italian travelers reach 7,700 people

Spanish border controls on travelers arriving from Italy have affected nearly 7,700 people, according to data from the Ministry of the Interior. These measures were ordered by the Spanish government on August 8 in response to Italy's suspension of the Schengen Area following a migration crisis in Ceuta.

As of the afternoon of Saturday, August 22, authorities had requested documentation from 7,696 individuals across 696 monitored flights, involving 1,144 agents. Significant activity was recorded at Madrid-Barajas airport, where 185 passengers from third countries were checked, and at Barcelona-El Prat, where 72 passengers were identified.

Other locations reporting checks include Málaga, Sevilla, Valencia, and the Balearic Islands. In the Canary Islands, 22 identifications were made at Tenerife South airport. These temporary border controls are scheduled to remain in place until September 7. Meanwhile, the Italian government has not yet determined when it will lift its own controls on travelers from Spain, stating the decision depends on when security risks disappear.
