Spain implements diverse strategies to combat food waste

Efforts to combat food waste in Spain are being driven by both corporate donation programs and new collaborative operational groups. Galletas Gullón has reported donating approximately 145 tons of products over the last four years as part of its Food Waste Prevention Plan. In 2025 alone, the company allocated nearly 19 tons to social entities, food banks, and sports organizations, including the Red Cross and Cáritas.

Simultaneously, the Simbiored operational group, launched by the Espogoladors Foundation and several other entities, has secured nearly 600,000 euros in public funding to reduce food waste through the reintroduction of products into the food chain. Supported by the Feader fund and the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, the project aims to implement a collaborative model for food valorization through 2029. One initiative within this group, Es-Imperfect, works with farmers to market 'imperfect' produce that would otherwise be discarded due to aesthetic or market standards, with a goal of transforming 220,000 kilograms of food by 2026.
