Spain implements ecological restoration projects in Mar Menor and Aranjuez
In the Mar Menor region, Veolia is collaborating with the Comunidad de Regantes del Campo de Cartagena on a project to renaturalize irrigation reservoirs. Funded by the Fundación Biodiversidad, the initiative aims to transform eight hydraulic infrastructures into green filters and biodiversity hubs. The project seeks to improve water quality, create ecological corridors, and enhance agricultural efficiency through ecological restoration.
Separately, the El Regajal-Mar de Ontígola Natural Reserve in Aranjuez highlights the historical evolution of Spanish landscapes. Originally commissioned by Felipe II in the 16th century to supply water and attract birds for falconry, the Mar de Ontígola reservoir has evolved into a vital wetland. Today, the area serves as one of Europe’s most significant butterfly reserves, blending Renaissance engineering heritage with high biological diversity.
