A new age rating and content labeling system for audiovisual media entered into force on Thursday, September 10, in Spain. The initiative aims to enhance the protection of minors and provide clearer information to viewers regarding the programs they consume.

Developed through an agreement between the National Commission on Markets and Competition (CNMC), the Ministry for Digital Transformation and Public Civil Service, and major audiovisual sector players, the system establishes common criteria for television, on-demand services, and influencers classified as highly relevant users (UER). The framework incorporates a new Code of Conduct for program rating as provided by the General Law on Audiovisual Communication.

While maintaining existing age categories (TP, +7, +12, +16, +18, and X), the new system introduces specific descriptors to explain why certain content is rated a certain way. These descriptors include indicators for sex, violence, reprehensible behavior, addiction, and inappropriate language. Additionally, the regulation prohibits the broadcast of gratuitous violence or pornography on open television, and requires on-demand services to host such adult content in separate catalogs.
