Spain implements new labeling rules and food safety advice for canned goods
New regulations and food safety guidelines are impacting the canned goods sector in Spain. According to Royal Decree 1082/2025, published in the Official State Gazette (BOE), new labeling rules for fishery and aquaculture products have been in effect since January 2, 2026. These rules require more accurate commercial names to ensure consumers can correctly identify the specific species of fish or mollusks, such as sardines, mussels, or cockles, contained within the cans.
Regarding food safety, pharmaceutical and food technologist Boticaria García advises against storing opened canned goods directly in the refrigerator. She notes that once a can is opened, oxygen enters the container, leading to oxidation and potential metallic flavors. To prevent food deterioration, she recommends immediately transferring the contents to an airtight container, such as a plastic tub, rather than simply covering the can with a plate or film. This method provides a safer margin for consumption, typically within three to four days.
