Spain implements stroke care improvements through technology and training

The Hospital Vall d’Hebron, in collaboration with Siemens Healthineers and Medtronic, has implemented the ‘One Step Ictus’ project to streamline stroke treatment. Since its launch in 2022, the initiative has reduced the average time from hospital arrival to the first puncture from 46 to 14 minutes by concentrating exploration, stabilization, diagnosis, and treatment in a single space.

This integrated approach has led to a 2.5-fold increase in patients treated in the specialized unit and a 35% increase in performed thrombectomies. Additionally, the percentage of moderate stroke patients showing adequate functional improvement after three months rose from 25% to 50%.

In a separate effort to improve emergency response, the company Redion has received the ‘Espacio Cerebroprotegido’ certification from the Fundación Freno al Ictus. This follows the training of 354 professionals in recognizing stroke symptoms and acting during emergencies, aiming to create safer work environments through rapid response capabilities.
