Spain imposes up to €3,000 fines for loud music in cars on Tenerife

The Guardia Civil has stepped up checks on drivers in Tenerife during the summer months, targeting vehicles with music played at excessive volumes. Under Spanish traffic regulations, using headphones while driving is a serious offence, punishable by a €200 fine and three licence points. Local authorities also penalise drivers whose music exceeds noise limits, with fines ranging from €90 to €300 for moderate excess, and up to €3,000 for severe disturbances that endanger safety or cause public nuisance.

The Directorate General of Traffic (DGT) advises motorists to keep volume at a level that allows them to hear surrounding sounds, avoid playing loud music near hospitals, schools or residential areas, and refrain from manipulating audio devices while driving. The enforcement campaign aims to reduce distracted‑driving incidents linked to high‑volume music.

Drivers found violating the limits may face the maximum penalty of €3,000, loss of points, and possible further legal action if the behavior results in accidents or complaints.
