Spain introduces 200‑euro fines for motorcyclists, couriers and e‑scooters

The Spanish Directorate General of Traffic (DGT) has added a uniform 200‑euro fine to the new General Traffic Regulations for motorcyclists, delivery couriers and electric‑scooter users. The penalty, effective from 1 October 2026, covers offences such as riding on sidewalks, using a mobile phone while in control, and failing to wear mandatory safety equipment (reflective vests for couriers, helmets, lights and reflective clothing for scooters, gloves and closed shoes for motorcyclists). The measures aim to improve visibility and reduce accidents; points on the licence are not currently affected.

In the town of Sant Pere de Ribes, the municipal council has launched the "Empatitza" information campaign to promote the local ordinance that mirrors the DGT rules. The ordinance, applying to riders aged 14 (rising to 15) and imposing a 25 km/h speed limit, requires helmets, insurance, DGT registration, lights and a bell. Violations are fined from 100 euros for minor infractions (e.g., riding on a sidewalk) up to 500 euros for the most serious offences such as riding under the influence. Educational sessions in schools are planned alongside the campaign videos starring actor David Parra.
