Spain introduces new regulations for pension funds

Spain is implementing new regulations for pension funds to improve transparency and comparability. The Ministry of Economy, Commerce and Business has issued a ministerial order establishing sixteen standardized categories for pension funds, ranging from monetary to absolute return. This move aims to allow participants to compare products more effectively, replacing the previous system where different managers used inconsistent labeling.

Data from Inverco shows that as of the first quarter of 2026, there were 10.5 million open pension plans with eight million participants in Spain. While pension products remain a popular savings tool, experts note that many individuals choose them primarily for year-end tax benefits without adequately calculating the long-term capital required to maintain their standard of living during retirement.

Globally, the sector is seeing significant growth. According to the Thinking Ahead Institute, the world's 300 largest pension funds managed approximately $27.7 trillion at the close of 2025, marking a 13.4% increase from the previous year.
