Spain investigates high‑speed motorcyclist and enforces mandatory helmet rule for cyclists

The Guardia Civil’s traffic investigation unit opened a case against a motorcyclist who was recorded traveling at 166 km/h on the A‑480 highway during the Jerez Moto Grand Prix. The alleged offense, punishable under article 379.1 of the Penal Code, carries up to six months’ imprisonment, a fine of six to twelve months’ salary, community service, and a one‑year driving ban.

A new amendment to the Reglamento General de Circulación, effective in 2026, removes all exemptions and makes helmet use compulsory for every cyclist on inter‑urban roads. The rule also imposes a €200 fine for delivery riders who neglect helmets or reflective vests. Drivers must keep a wider distance when overtaking cyclists.

Separately, the Guardia Civil rescued a male cyclist who suffered serious injuries after falling into the dry Alcarayón stream in the Guadiamar green corridor, Seville. He was evacuated to San Juan de Dios Hospital in Bormujos with multiple rib fractures and poly‑trauma, and his condition remains serious.
