Cádiz authorities investigate veterinarian and owner over mutilated fighting cocks

The Guardia Civil is investigating a veterinarian and an animal owner for alleged animal cruelty in Castellar de la Frontera, Cádiz. The investigation began during a routine vehicle check where officers discovered three fighting cocks being transported in a cage.

Specialists from the Nature Protection Service (SEPRONA) inspected the birds and found visible mutilations, specifically the removal of their combs and wattles (descrestado and desbarbado). While the owner provided a veterinary certificate to justify the procedures, authorities determined the document lacked legal validity as it failed to provide a specific therapeutic reason or individualized clinical justification for each animal.

Both the owner and the veterinarian are being investigated as alleged perpetrators of animal abuse. The case has been referred to the competent judicial authority.
