Spain invests €40 million in grid technology and AI tools for critical infrastructure

Elewit, the technology platform of Redeia, will invest €40 million over the next four years to accelerate innovation and digitalisation of Spain’s high‑voltage electricity transmission system. The funding will support the deployment of advanced solutions to improve operational efficiency, cyber‑security and overall resilience of the grid, as part of Redeia’s 2029 strategic plan. In 2025 Elewit reported €10.6 million in innovation spending, 16 new technological solutions and 62 projects, including seven public‑private R&D collaborations.

Research centre Tecnalia is developing artificial‑intelligence models and digital‑twin simulations within the EU‑funded ReCharged project to strengthen the resilience of critical transport and energy assets. Its AI system, based on a ResNet‑18 architecture, achieved over 95 % detection accuracy for cracks and leaks in tunnels and more than 96 % precision for faults in power lines. The project also creates digital twins for assets such as the Polyfytos bridge in Greece, with pilot studies carried out in Portugal, Switzerland and Greece, aiming to optimise maintenance planning and improve asset reliability.
