Spain invests in green hydrogen and clean steel production

Spain is accelerating its green hydrogen and industrial decarbonization efforts through significant new investments. The Ministry for Ecological Transition (MITECO) has approved €274.2 million in aid for four renewable hydrogen projects in Castilla-La Mancha, Galicia, and Aragón, utilizing NextGenerationEU funds via the IDAE.

Repsol is the primary beneficiary, receiving approximately €183.18 million for two projects: the Atlas project in Arteixo (A Coruña), which aims to produce 60,634 tons of renewable hydrogen over a decade, and the P-HYNET project in Puertollano (Ciudad Real). Other recipients include Doña Urraca Energy and AccionaPlug, alongside projects Quixotgen and ZaragozaH2V.

In a separate development for the heavy industry sector, the Hydnum Steel project in Puertollano is set to build the Iberian Peninsula's first clean steel factory. Supported by a €150 million investment from COFIDES and strategic funding from the PERTE for Industrial Decarbonization, the facility's total investment is expected to exceed €1.5 billion. The plant will utilize green hydrogen and renewable energy to power electric furnaces, significantly reducing carbon emissions in steel production.
