Spain issues gold coin honoring Extremaduran Iberian pig

The Fábrica Nacional de Moneda y Timbre-Real Casa de la Moneda has announced a new limited edition collection coin featuring the Iberian pig. The 24-karat gold coin, consisting of one ounce of pure gold, is limited to 5,000 pieces.

The release honors one of Spain's most representative livestock breeds, which has a deep connection to the Extremadura region. Extremadura is a major hub for the sector, hosting nearly four out of every ten Iberian pigs in Spain, with a population exceeding 1.36 million animals according to the Ministry of Agriculture.

The coin's design features the Iberian pig in its natural habitat on the reverse side, while the obverse displays the historic Pillars of Hercules with the motto ‘Plus vltra’. This issuance follows previous commemorative coins dedicated to the Iberian lynx, the bull, and the imperial eagle.
