Spain issues over 69,000 speeding fines during enforcement week

Spanish traffic authorities reported that over 69,000 drivers were fined for speeding during a one-week enforcement campaign in August. Data from the Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT) shows that officials inspected more than one million vehicles across 3,466 checkpoints established by the Guardia Civil.

Of the vehicles checked, 69,231 drivers were caught exceeding speed limits, representing 6.7% of the total. More than half of these infractions (55.3%) occurred on highways and expressways, while conventional roads saw a higher proportion of violations at 7.05%.

Separately, clarifications have been issued regarding viral claims about mobile phone use at toll booths. While Spanish law imposes a 200-euro fine and a six-point deduction for manually using a phone while driving, police sources indicate that using a phone exclusively for contactless payments is typically treated similarly to using a bank card and is not usually penalized.
