Valencia and Castellón under red alert for torrential rain

A red weather alert has been issued by AEMET for the Valencian Community and parts of Catalonia, including Valencia, Castellón, and Tarragona, due to extreme risk of torrential rain and storms. The meteorological event, driven by a DANA, could see rainfall exceeding 90 liters per square meter in a single hour and up to 250 liters in 12 hours in certain areas of Castellón.

Authorities have implemented significant emergency measures. In Valencia, the City Council has suspended classes in flood-prone areas and closed parks, gardens, and libraries. In Castellón, schools are suspended, and the municipal shelter has increased its capacity. Healthcare services in Valencia and Castellón have also modified activities, rescheduling non-urgent surgeries and consultations to reduce movement.

Transportation has been heavily impacted. Renfe has suspended several rail services, including Cercanías lines in Valencia and long-distance connections like Euromed and Intercity between the Valencian Community and Catalonia. Emergency services, including the Valencia Fire Consortium, have reinforced their presence with hundreds of additional personnel to respond to potential flooding and incidents.
