Argentina economy contracts as unemployment hits 7.9% FAST-MOVING
Argentina's economy experienced a contraction in the second quarter of 2026, with GDP falling 0.6% compared to the first quarter. This downturn was driven by significant declines in private consumption, which dropped 2.4%, and public consumption, which fell 2.3%. Investment, measured as gross fixed capital formation, also decreased by 0.8%. In contrast, exports provided a buffer, growing by 2.5% during the quarter and 13.7% compared to the same period in 2025.
The labor market showed signs of deterioration, with the unemployment rate rising to 7.9%, the highest level since 2021. This figure affects approximately 1.8 million people. Simultaneously, labor informality increased to 45% of the employed population, a notable rise from previous levels. Within the informal sector, the proportion of self-employed workers grew from 34.3% to 37.3%.
Regional disparities were evident in the labor data. The Pampeana region reported the highest unemployment rate at 9.7%, while the Northwest region recorded the lowest at 4.3%. In Mendoza, unemployment reached 8.1%, exceeding the national average. In Tierra del Fuego, the rate in the Ushuaia-Río Grande area reached 8.1%, affecting roughly 7,000 people.
