Spain launches 24‑hour ice vending machines to curb widespread shortages

A Boreal study of more than 1,000 Spanish consumers found that 97 % have run out of ice when they needed it most, especially during the early‑morning hours in tourist locations such as campsites and marinas. The typical purchase is impulsive – 89 % of respondents buy ice on immediate need, often when drinks are already warm or when nearby shops are closing.

Traditional ice supply relies on refrigerated transport and limited store hours, leading to waits of over 40 minutes at night. To address this, a Spanish‑developed solution offers machines that produce and dispense ice on‑site 24 hours a day, eliminating the logistical bottleneck and providing a permanent service for holidaymakers and outdoor events.

Annual per‑capita ice consumption in Spain is about 10 kg, with demand spiking in summer. The new vending technology aims to meet this seasonal surge and improve convenience for families and travelers.
