Spain launches initiatives to support ostomy patients
In observance of World Ostomy Day, initiatives in Spain are working to increase visibility and accessibility for ostomy patients.
The Hospital Universitario de Dénia has launched a photographic exhibition titled ‘Heroes.’ The project features eight patients from the Dénia Health Department, using images and first-person testimonies to illustrate their adaptation to life after surgery. The initiative, driven by specialized ostomy nurses Carmela Marí and Clara Fernández-Cañadas, aims to reduce social stigma and normalize the clinical condition.
In Alhaurín de la Torre, the local government has announced the installation of two inclusive bathrooms. These facilities are designed to provide the privacy, hygiene, and safety required by ostomy patients for managing their external bags. The announcement coincided with a hospital cycling event organized by Ostomía Málaga to promote the idea that ostomies do not prevent individuals from maintaining active social, professional, or sporting lives.
