Spain launches mandatory eco‑efficiency rules for tech companies

On 2 July 2026 the Spanish government announced a new initiative, "Vuelta a lo básico", to curb the ecological footprint of technology firms. The plan imposes strict standards on energy consumption and digital waste, targeting a 30 % reduction in data‑centre power use by 2028. Companies must submit quarterly efficiency reports and undergo independent audits, with sanctions for non‑compliance. A €500 million fund will support small‑ and medium‑size enterprises in modernising their infrastructure. The programme must be approved by parliament before 15 July, will take effect in January 2027, and firms have until 31 December 2026 to present adaptation plans. Minister José M. Ruiz said, "We can no longer ignore the environmental impact of digital infrastructure." The industry association AETE warned the measures could slow innovation, while the NGO GreenTech Spain praised the move, noting data‑centres account for about 2 % of global electricity consumption.
