Spain launches P35 road sign to warn of weaving lanes

Spain’s Directorate General of Traffic (DGT) added the P35 warning sign to the official road‑sign catalogue in 2025. The triangular sign, with two cars and crossing arrows, alerts drivers that they are approaching a weaving lane – a stretch where vehicles merging onto a motorway and those preparing to exit share the same space before diverging.

The sign is placed 150‑500 metres before the lane and follows the national warning format: red border, white background, black car silhouettes. Misinterpreting the sign can lead to a €200 fine and the loss of up to four licence points. Under Spain’s traffic rules, priority is not always given to vehicles already on the motorway; a vehicle that has already entered the weaving lane while leaving the motorway takes precedence over one still trying to join.

The DGT also advises drivers leaving a motorway to ease off the accelerator to merge safely, while those entering should build up speed when conditions permit. Proper use of indicators and timely lane changes are emphasized to avoid collisions in the overlapping traffic flow.
