Spain launches remote-controlled highway radar network and raises penalties for radar detectors

Catalonia has introduced a remote‑controlled traffic monitoring system comprising eight radar and camera stations on the AP‑7 and C‑33 highways. Funded with €4.4 million, the stations can read vehicle licence plates, verify insurance and ITV validity, weigh trucks, and check tachograph data without stopping traffic. The technology, installed at former toll sites, aims to increase safety and reduce the delays caused by mass inspections.

From 1 October 2026, Spain’s traffic regulations will also increase sanctions for carrying radar detectors or jammers. The new rules make possession of any such device an offense, with fines up to €6 000 and the loss of six driving‑license points for jammers, and €200 plus three points for detectors. Legal GPS‑based warning apps remain permitted.
