Spain launches safety campaign to curb tractor rollover deaths

A national safety initiative targeting tractor rollovers was unveiled by the Instituto Nacional de Seguridad y Salud en el Trabajo (INSST) and the Comisión Nacional de Seguridad y Salud en el Trabajo (CNSST). Data from 2016‑2025 show 579 fatalities, with 26 dead so far in 2026, and analysts estimate that 99 % of these deaths could be avoided with proper rollover protective structures (ROPS) and seat‑belt use. Roughly 300,000 Spanish tractors still lack ROPS, and many older machines are not equipped with safety belts.

Regional bodies are reinforcing the effort. In Andalusia, the Laboratorio‑Observatorio Andaluz de Condiciones de Trabajo (LASA) backs the national campaign, while Galicia’s Instituto de Seguridade e Saúde Laboral (Issga) launched a localized outreach in Valga, distributing bilingual brochures and using mobile inspection units to educate farmers, many of whom are over 65, about safe tractor operation and the importance of protective equipment.
