Blood donation trends and regional health campaigns in Jersey and Spain
Health authorities in Jersey and Spain are managing blood supplies through different strategies. In Jersey, blood donations have seen a decline of approximately 8.6% since 2023. However, Health and Care Jersey reports no shortage in stocks. Officials attribute the stability of supplies to medical advances in patient blood management and a shift toward single-unit transfusions, which reduce the total volume of blood required per patient.
In Spain, health services are launching active campaigns to combat seasonal declines in donations during the summer. The Canary Islands' Health Service (SCS) is deploying a network of mobile collection units across the archipelago to maintain hospital supplies. Similarly, in Castilla y León, a special campaign is linking blood donation with upcoming astronomical events, offering eclipse viewing glasses to donors in Ciudad Rodrigo to encourage participation.
