Spain launches summer inclusion programmes for people with disabilities and older adults

In the municipality of El Ejido, six local associations are running summer camps and schools for people with disabilities during July and August. The programmes aim to preserve gains made during the school year in personal autonomy, communication, socialisation and cognitive development. Activities include swimming, beach trips, crafts, music therapy, computer use and family‑respite services. Mayor Francisco Góngora and disability councillor María del Mar Martínez visited the sites, stressing the camps’ role as essential educational and therapeutic resources.

In Bilbao, the city’s Social Action Department piloted the “Uda On” (Good Summer) initiative for 84 elderly residents at risk of social isolation. Running twice a week in the Abando Senior Centre throughout July and August, the project offers movement sessions, music, wellness workshops, walks, literary talks and inter‑generational games to foster confidence, belonging and informal support networks beyond the summer months.
