Spain's DGT launches Operation Verano 2026 for 104 million summer trips

The Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT) activated the first phase of Operation Verano 2026 on 3 July, a summer traffic programme running until 31 August. The agency forecasts 104 million long‑distance journeys, with 4.83 million expected during the opening weekend alone. Four special weekend devices will manage the surge, while the Paso del Estrecho operation anticipates about 800 000 vehicles crossing to North Africa.

A distinct element this year is a dedicated plan for the total solar eclipse on 12 August, which is expected to draw large traffic flows to the eclipse path. The operation will deploy more than 31 500 personnel, over 2 000 cameras, 2 400 variable‑message panels and additional rest‑area facilities to monitor and control traffic across the main corridors.

The DGT highlighted that the increased mobility will cause significant congestion on major exits from urban centres and routes to tourist destinations, with a strong return flow to cities on Sundays.
