Spain leads advanced economies in public administration spending growth

According to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) World Economic Outlook, Spain has seen a 2.7% increase in government operational consumption for goods and services since 2018. This growth rate exceeds the average for advanced economies (2.1%) and the Eurozone (1.8%).

While Spain experienced a significant 10.9% economic contraction during the pandemic, it has also recorded one of the strongest subsequent rebounds. However, analysts note a divergence between economic growth and public spending; BBVA Research reports that while Spain's GDP has grown by 12% since late 2019, public consumption has increased by 20%.

Drivers for this increase include structural rises in healthcare spending and a growing public workforce, which now exceeds three million employees. Future costs are expected to rise further due to a promised 4.5% wage increase for public employees, potentially reaching 5% when accounting for inflation. This adjustment is estimated to add approximately 10,000 million euros to the public consumption bill.
