Spain leads Europe in university student detachment

A study by the Fundación Conocimiento y Desarrollo (CYD) reveals that Spain has the highest rate of university detachment in Europe. According to the ‘Via Universitària 2023-2025’ report, 31% of Spanish students feel they do not fit into the university environment, significantly higher than the European average of 18%.

The research, which surveyed 5,572 students across 20 universities in the Xarxa Vives d’Universitats, highlights a growing disconnection from campus life. Nearly 80% of students report that they never participate in university governing bodies or associative entities. This lack of engagement extends to physical activity; while 71% of students exercise weekly, 83% of those students do so outside of university facilities.

Francisco Esteban, a professor at the Universitat de Barcelona, noted that universities are increasingly being treated as transitory spaces rather than communities. He observed that students often arrive only for scheduled classes and leave immediately, avoiding libraries, cafeterias, and academic seminars.
