Spain leads European tourism revenue despite France's higher visitor numbers

European tourism reached significant milestones in 2025, with the region remaining a primary global destination. According to UN Tourism, international arrivals reached approximately 1.52 billion, a 4% increase from the previous year. Within the European Union, tourism overnight stays hit a record 3.1 billion, representing a 2.2% growth compared to 2024.

While France remains the world leader in the total number of international visitors, with 102 million arrivals, Spain leads in economic impact through tourist spending. Spain recorded approximately 134.7 billion euros in foreign tourist expenditure, a 6.8% increase from the prior year. In contrast, France's international tourism revenue reached 77.5 billion euros.

Spain also leads the EU in overnight stays in registered accommodations, totaling 513.6 million. Italy and Germany follow with 476.9 million and 442.1 million overnight stays, respectively. Data indicates that Spain's economic success is driven by longer stays in coastal and major tourist centers, whereas French tourism often involves shorter visits from neighboring European countries.
