EU Energy Ministers are meeting informally in Dublin to coordinate a response to rising energy costs and supply concerns ahead of the winter season. The discussions focus on energy affordability, market stability, and security of supply, particularly in light of geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, which have added over 100 billion euros in costs to the EU.

European Energy Commissioner Dan Jørgensen warned that while there is no immediate threat to supply security, the upcoming winter will likely be difficult due to high prices. He has urged member states to implement measures to reduce natural gas and electricity consumption during peak hours. Additionally, the Commission is considering a delay in the implementation of methane import regulations to address practical difficulties in enforcement.

Gas storage levels across Europe are currently at approximately 71%, which is significantly lower than the historical seasonal average and the 90% target previously set by the Commission. Some major economies, including Germany and the Netherlands, are facing even lower storage margins. In response to market volatility, the International Energy Agency is also discussing the potential release of strategic oil reserves to help stabilize the market.
