Spain Low Emission Zones: Driving restrictions and fines

Drivers traveling in Spain must be aware of Low Emission Zones, known as ‘Zona de Bajas Emisiones’ (ZBE), to avoid fines of up to 200 euros. These zones restrict vehicle access based on environmental characteristics to reduce pollution.

Regulations vary by municipality, meaning rules in cities like Madrid, Barcelona, and Valencia are not identical. Access is determined by fuel type and emission standards; generally, older petrol vehicles (pre-Euro 3) and diesel vehicles (pre-Euro 4) face the most restrictions. The Spanish environmental classification system uses categories such as 0, ECO, C, and B to manage access.

Enforcement is often automated through cameras that read license plates, meaning drivers may receive a fine even if not stopped by a patrol. Foreign drivers should be particularly cautious, as some cities, such as Barcelona, may require prior registration for non-local vehicles to ensure compliance with local access rules.
