Spain marks 87th anniversary of the execution of the '13 Roses' and '43 Claveles

On 5 August 2026, Spain commemorated the 87th anniversary of the 1939 execution of thirteen young women, known as the "13 Roses," and forty‑three men, the "43 Claveles," who were shot for their left‑wing affiliations. Youth Socialist secretary Aránzazu Figueroa led a tribute, emphasizing that “Vuestro legado es el activo más valioso que poseemos.”

The Platform for Memory of Aragon (PAMA) and Izquierda Unida Aragón also held events, recalling the victims’ names and condemning historical revisionism and the resurgence of fascist groups. PAMA highlighted that “Hay nombres que el tiempo no puede borrar,” stressing the need for justice, truth, and the protection of democratic rights.

Organisers called for continued vigilance against intolerance, urging society to honour the memory of the victims as a safeguard for freedom, equality and human dignity.
