Diana Quer case marks ten years since disappearance and murder in Spain
Spain marks the tenth anniversary of the disappearance and murder of Diana Quer, an 18-year-old student who vanished in A Pobra do Caramiñal on August 22, 2016. The case, which captivated the nation for 497 days, concluded with the conviction of José Enrique Abuín, known as ‘El Chicle’, who is currently serving a sentence of permanent reviewable prison.
Diana disappeared while walking home from local festivities. Her final communications via WhatsApp indicated she felt uncomfortable being followed. Following an extensive investigation by the Guardia Civil involving the analysis of 15,000 license plates and the recovery of her mobile phone in Rianxo, Abuín was identified as the perpetrator. He eventually confessed to the crime after being detained in December 2017.
On this anniversary, Diana’s father, Juan Carlos Quer, shared a message stating that her legacy would help save lives by preventing the repeal of the permanent reviewable prison sentence in Spain. A sculpture was also inaugurated in A Pobra do Caramiñal to honor her memory.
