Spain gender-based violence victims reach 37 in 2026

The Spanish Ministry of Equality has confirmed a new case of gender-based violence in Madrid, bringing the total number of women murdered in 2026 to 37. This represents the highest figure since 2023.

The incident occurred in San Sebastián de los Reyes, where an 88-year-old woman died in a hospital after being found with multiple injuries in her home. Her 90-year-old husband was found dead in the same residence, appearing to have died by suicide. Authorities noted that there were no previous reports of domestic violence against the husband, and the victim had no minor children.

Minister of Equality Ana Redondo and Government Delegate Carmen Martínez Perza expressed their condemnation of the crime and called for increased institutional efforts to prevent further deaths. Since official records began in 2003, the total number of victims has reached 1,378.
