Spain municipalities cancel fireworks due to wildfire risk
Hundreds of municipalities across Spain have suspended traditional fireworks displays during recent weeks due to high wildfire risks driven by intense summer temperatures. Local governments in regions including Andalusia, Aragon, Castilla y León, Castilla-La Mancha, and Extremadura have implemented restrictions to prevent accidental ignitions.
Significant wildfire activity has already impacted several areas. In Niebla, Huelva, fires destroyed 31,000 hectares, while the western Sierra of Madrid saw 27,000 hectares burned. In Huesca, the Las Peñas de Riglos fire devastated 17,500 hectares, though it is currently being brought under control.
Data indicates that wildfires caused by pyrotechnics represent 0.049% of the total hectares burned in Spain in recent years. Officials, such as the mayor of Soto del Real, have emphasized that preventing new incidents is a priority to avoid diverting emergency resources away from active firefighting efforts.
