Spain negotiates higher residence allowances for public workers in the Balearic and Canary Islands

Spanish public‑sector unions are in talks with the State administration to raise the residence allowance paid to civil servants stationed in the Balearic Islands. Proposals under discussion range from €105 to €697 per month, with the UGT Services Public of the Balearic Islands saying an agreement is close and a further meeting is scheduled for early next week. The CSIF union highlights the archipelago’s special geographic challenges, arguing that the allowance is needed to retain staff and avoid talent loss.

Separately, the CCOO union has called on the government to extend any residency‑allowance revision to the Canary Islands, citing Royal Decree‑Law 19/2026, which mandates a review of the Balearic allowances within nine months. CCOO argues that the same principle should apply to the Canaries, as well as other territories with coverage difficulties such as Ceuta and Melilla, and urges a collective bargaining process that also addresses service‑related indemnities.
