Spain observes Assumption of the Virgin holiday on August 15
The Cathedral of Plasencia will mark the traditional Assumption of the Virgin celebration from 12 to 15 August. Daily masses, rosary prayers and a solemn Eucharist will be held, and the historic 15th‑century “Virgen Durmiente” statue will be displayed for the first time in months. The events are overseen by Bishop Ernesto Jesús Brotóns, who will preside over the final ceremony on 15 August.
The Spanish government has confirmed that 15 August 2026 is a national public holiday, even though it falls on a Saturday. Recent judicial rulings mean that employees whose regular weekly rest day is Saturday may be entitled to an additional day of leave, affecting millions of workers. The holiday coincides with many local patron‑saint festivals and a peak period for summer tourism.
