Spain orders beach closures over fecal contamination in Galicia and Andalusia

The municipal beach of Arneles in Cangas, Galicia, was flagged with a red warning flag and closed to swimming after water tests recorded Escherichia coli levels of 1,184 per 100 ml, well above the legal limit of 800. The local fishermen’s group Cofradía de Aldán‑O Hío attributes the contamination to the massive, prolonged anchoring of recreational yachts in the nearby ría, accusing some boat owners of dumping waste directly into the sea. The group is urging the Cangas council and the Port Authority of Marín‑Pontevedra to impose stricter anchorage controls.

In Tarifa, Andalusia, the beach of Atlanterra was also closed after health authorities warned of elevated fecal bacteria. The incident sparked a citizen petition that has gathered more than 1,600 signatures, demanding urgent action from the Junta de Andalucía and the Tarifa municipality. Residents claim the problem reflects long‑standing infrastructure shortfalls, insufficient public services, and deteriorating public spaces that threaten both health and the area’s reputation as a major tourist destination.
