Villafranco del Guadiana residents oppose name change request

The Spanish Ministry of Territorial Policy and Democratic Memory has requested a name change for Villafranco del Guadiana, a district of Badajoz, to remove vestiges of the Franco regime. This move follows the 2022 Law of Democratic Memory, which classifies certain toponyms as remnants of the dictatorship.

Local leaders and residents have expressed strong opposition to the measure. Juan Daniel Sánchez, the mayor of the district, and Ignacio Gragera, the mayor of Badajoz, have both rejected the proposal. Gragera stated that the Law of Democratic Memory should not infringe upon the will of a people, noting that the residents feel a deep sense of identity and belonging to the name.

Many residents view the name not as an ideological symbol, but as a tribute to the original settler families who worked to establish the community decades ago. Opponents argue that the change offers no benefit and serves only to alter local history and identity against the majority's wishes.
