Spain packaging industry anticipates SDDR delay to 2029

The food and packaging sectors in Spain are anticipating a delay in the implementation of the Deposit and Return System (SDDR) for single-use plastic bottles, cans, and cartons. While the initial target was November 2026, industry stakeholders believe the rollout will likely be pushed back to January 2029, which is the final deadline set by the European Union.

Industry leaders cite several logistical challenges, including the need to manage approximately 17 billion units annually across half a million commercial establishments. The transition is estimated to require investments between 400 and 600 million euros for machinery and storage infrastructure. Additionally, the sector points to the complexity of Spain's highly fragmented municipal structure and a consumption model heavily reliant on bars and restaurants as significant hurdles to efficient organization.
