Spain grants humanitarian pardon to former Niemeyer director Natalio Grueso
The Spanish Council of Ministers approved a humanitarian pardon for playwright and former director of the Centro Cultural Oscar Niemeyer, Natalio Grueso. The decision was taken after prison doctors reported a serious deterioration in his health and recommended his release.
Grueso had been sentenced in 2020 by the Audiencia of Asturias to five years for continuous malversation of public funds and an additional three years for continuous corporate offences. He led the Niemeyer foundation from its creation in late 2006 until his transfer to the Madrid City Council, where from March 2012 to June 2014 he oversaw all municipal theatres. While his prison term was commuted, his disqualification from public office remains in force.
His family and supporters thanked the government, describing the pardon as a vital step to allow him to receive appropriate care. Grueso is also a novelist, author of "La soledad" (2012) and "La república de los ladrones" (2017). The judicial process originated in December 2012 after the Niemeyer foundation, then chaired by former Culture Councilor Ana González, filed a complaint with the Avilés court.
