Spain enters early election campaign for November 29
Spain has entered an early election campaign for the general elections scheduled for November 29. The decision to call for early elections followed the parliamentary rejection of government housing decrees, a move prompted by widespread social unrest and protests regarding the housing crisis.
Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and the PSOE are campaigning on a platform of social progress, defending the current government's achievements in areas such as minimum wage and gender equality. Sánchez has specifically appealed for high voter turnout and defended the use of mail-in voting, arguing that it is essential for workers and students. The PSOE is also focusing on housing stability, proposing a 10,000 million euro loan line for first-time homebuyers.
In contrast, the opposition leader Alberto Núñez Feijóo and the Partido Popular (PP) have launched their campaign with promises of national reconstruction. Feijóo has criticized the current administration for corruption and mismanagement of housing and institutions. The PP has also emphasized regional interests, particularly for the Valencian Community, promising better infrastructure and water security.
Political maneuvering is also evident among smaller parties. ERC has designated Gabriel Rufián as its lead candidate for Barcelona and is exploring potential collaboration with Podemos to unite left-wing forces. Meanwhile, regional parties like PNV and EH Bildu are expected to play a decisive role in determining which bloc can form a government if no single party achieves a majority.
