Spain pension reform: Lump-sum payments reduce retirement rewards
A report by Fedea indicates that the Spanish government's pension reform contains a financial disadvantage for retirees who opt for a single lump-sum payment instead of a permanent monthly increase. While the reform aims to delay effective retirement by penalizing early withdrawal and rewarding delayed retirement, the incentive for staying in the workforce is significantly reduced for those choosing the lump sum.
Data shows a growing trend in this preference: in 2023, 18.5% of delayed retirees chose the lump sum or a mixed modality, a figure that rose to 24% in 2024. However, the study concludes there is no actuarial neutrality; the lump-sum payment effectively halves the total financial reward compared to receiving a permanent 4% increase in monthly pension payments over a lifetime.
