Spain plans 452 km of new power lines in Canary Islands

The Spanish Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (Miteco) has unveiled a revised electrical planning proposal for the Canary Islands aimed at securing the archipelago's energy supply through 2030.

The updated plan includes the construction of 452 kilometers of new power lines and 26 new electrical substation parks. Additionally, 26 kilometers of existing lines will be upgraded to increase capacity. This reconfiguration follows the analysis of 2,566 allegations submitted during the public hearing phase.

The infrastructure expansion is designed to address an additional demand of 0.4 GW, driven primarily by the electrification of ports and residential sectors. The upgrades are also intended to facilitate the integration of approximately 2.2 GW of renewable energy production across the islands' seven distinct electrical networks. Key projects include the future link between Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura and the incorporation of the Güímar reversible hydroelectric plant in Tenerife.
