Spain: PP deputy criticizes suspension of ‘Ley de Nietos’

Cayetana Álvarez de Toledo, a deputy for the People's Party (PP), has criticized the temporary suspension of the ‘Ley de Nietos’ (Grandchildren Law) by the Spanish Supreme Court. The law, part of the Democratic Memory Law, facilitates Spanish nationality for descendants of Spaniards who left the country.

Álvarez de Toledo previously argued that the measure serves electoral interests rather than just historical reparation. She suggested that the incorporation of new citizens, estimated to potentially affect two million people in Latin America, could influence voting patterns, noting that the PP has traditionally performed better than the PSOE among Spaniards living abroad.
