Spain anticipates 5.76 million trips during Pilar holiday

Spain is preparing for a major mobility surge during the Pilar holiday period, from Friday, October 9, to Monday, October 12. The Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT) anticipates approximately 5.76 million long-distance road trips across the country, with significant traffic expected in Zaragoza and the Valencian Community.

To manage the influx, the DGT is deploying a comprehensive security and traffic management operation. This includes the use of speed radars, helicopters, drones, and cameras to monitor safety and prevent distractions. Authorities have also implemented restrictions on certain vehicles, such as trucks and those carrying dangerous goods, and will pause roadworks to ensure smoother circulation.

Regional forecasts indicate high activity: Granada expects 143,800 trips, Huelva expects 130,000, and Galicia anticipates 472,000 movements. In Catalonia, approximately 570,000 vehicles are expected to leave the Barcelona metropolitan area, with significant congestion predicted on the AP-7.

In addition to road travel, Renfe is offering over 1.12 million rail seats. Air travel in the Balearic Islands is expected to see 5,165 flights, while the Canary Islands anticipate 4,982 flights, representing a slight decrease compared to the previous year.
