Spain prepares for surge in religious pilgrimage and Holy Year celebrations

Religious pilgrimage in Spain is seeing significant growth ahead of upcoming Holy Years. In Santiago de Compostela, more than 363,000 pilgrims have received the official Compostela certificate so far in 2026. If current trends continue, the year could surpass the 2025 record, marking a fifth consecutive year of record-breaking numbers. Data shows a shift in pilgrim profiles: the French Way now accounts for 42.8% of participants, while Portuguese routes have grown to 39.1%. Additionally, international visitors now form the majority, with the United States, Italy, Portugal, and Germany being the leading nationalities.

Simultaneously, the town of Guadalupe in Extremadura is preparing for a Jubilee Year, which began on August 30, 2026, and will conclude on September 8, 2027. Local authorities expect the number of pilgrims to triple compared to ordinary years, providing a significant economic boost to the local hospitality, commerce, and service sectors.
