Spain projected to overtake France in global tourism by 2040

A joint report by Deloitte and Google forecasts a shift in global tourism leadership by 2040. While France currently holds the top position, having welcomed 102 million international visitors in 2025, Spain is projected to overtake it. Projections suggest Spain could host approximately 110 million tourists annually by 2040, compared to an estimated 105 million for France.

In 2025, Spain recorded 96.8 million foreign tourists, representing a 3.2% increase from the previous year, with international visitor spending reaching 134.7 billion euros. On a global scale, international travel is expected to reach approximately 2.4 billion trips by 2040, with Europe remaining a dominant region, accounting for roughly 38% of global tourism movement.

To maintain competitiveness, France is looking toward lesser-known destinations. Areas such as La Charité-sur-Loire in the Loire Valley and the Perche region are highlighted for their potential to attract travelers seeking cultural heritage, gastronomy, and slower-paced, authentic experiences away from mass tourism hubs.
